Utilizing facilitated conversation and a series of interactive exercises, this presentation outlines the three major phases of the “Volunteer Life Cycle”: Recruitment, Onboarding and Retention to offer a framework for sizing up the health and wellness of your organization’s culture and processes.

This critical conversation investigates the causes and origins of conflict in the firehouse and outlines ways to sustain a thriving workforce.

Together we will identify opportunities and share best practices for today’s public safety leaders to attract and retain the appropriate quantity and quality of volunteers they need to support the delivery of emergency services in their communities. Together we’ll work towards getting your fire department: “Ready for Your Next Recruit!”

Learning Objectives: 

1. Participants will discuss the reasons people don’t join, join, stay and don’t stay in their volunteer organizations.
2. Participants will gain an understanding of the need for, and opportunities to create a cohesive and collaborative work environment in and outside the firehouse.
3. Students will learn and exercise proven processes for conducting needs assessments, environmental evaluations and action plans for effecting change in their organizations.
