Neurodiverse individuals make up 15-20% of the population. This group includes people with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and processing disorders such as dyslexia and dysnomia. Unfortunately, individuals with autism are three times more likely to die from injury. Children with autism are more likely to hide during a fire, than exit the building due to sensory overload and anxiety. One in five neurodiverse teens will have negative encounters with law enforcement before the age of 21. The seminar is designed to provide a basic understanding of the minds of neurodiverse individuals. Fire and rescue participants will look at topics that include common characteristics, executive functioning, theory of mind and how people with ASD navigate a neurotypical world.
This seminar is designed to educate firefighters, EMS, and other first responders to be prepared for encounters with neurodiverse individuals. Participants will look at sensory triggers and how to minimize them when faced with an encounter. Participants will also examine their own language use and questioning style to create better communication in a variety of stressful situations. The seminar breaks down common interactions that occur with individuals with ASD and provides strategies on how to approach these encounters effectively and safely. Plan ahead when called to a house with a neurodiverse individual and create a community connection between the first responders and individuals in their fire district.
