Pediatric Medical Calls: Beyond the A-B-Cs. Through the presentation of case studies focused on childhood illness at different ages, this presentation will emphasize the importance of the across the room assessment and clear communication and keep observations skills to prioritize medical emergencies. Pediatric EMS calls occur every day in some EMSOP and once or twice a week in others. Every call is a “once in a life time” call for most families. Rapid assessment, accurate triage, pediatric base station consultation, and “the right care and right destination” are the components that make a difference for each child and family. Maryland has a Pediatric EMS Champion in every EMSOP and in some two or more. Come learn how to prepare and respond to the next pediatric medical call dispatched to your company.
SMART Objectives:
-Participants will recognize the unique aspects of pediatric anatomy and physiology that affect the priorities of care when presented with case studies for pediatric medically ill patients.
-Participants will describe the different developmental characteristics that place an infant, toddler, child and preteen at risk for specific types of emergencies.
-Participants will prioritize pediatric medical case scenarios may be treated locally, which require consults, and which need to be transported to pediatric specialty centers and which ones are located in different parts of Maryland.
