Necrotizing Fasciitis; Case Studies Across the Ages

June 20, 2022 @ 15:15 - 17:15

Free

Presented by: Mary Alice Van Hoy, RN; Manager, Shore Emerg. Care, Queenstown, MD

Room 215

Objectives

1. Identify three sources of necrotizing fasciitis
2. Discuss the clinical presentation of the acute, fulminate and sub-acute
3. Discuss the therapeutic management of the infected patient

Necrotizing Fasciitis is a rare life-threatening bacterial infection characterized by a rapidly spreading inflammation resulting in necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue and superficial fascia. While there are a variety of bacteria that can cause this infection, early recognition and intervention is imperative for survival. Case studies vary from an insect bite, dental work, small puncture to someone swimming in the water especially on the Gulf, Pamlico Sound, and the Chesapeake Bay.
